Course Overview

The HiQual UK Level 4 Diploma in Scaffolding Design & Engineering is designed to develop technical knowledge and practical skills in scaffold design principles, structural behaviour, load assessment, stability, component selection, engineering calculations, technical drawings, and temporary works documentation.

The qualification covers the design considerations associated with access scaffolds, system scaffolds, tube-and-coupler scaffolds, cantilever arrangements, loading bays, bridging structures, temporary roofs, and other specialised scaffold configurations. Learners develop an understanding of how loads are transferred through scaffold structures, how stability is maintained, and how design assumptions and site conditions influence structural performance.

The programme emphasises safe design, technical accuracy, risk assessment, verification, and communication between designers, contractors, scaffold supervisors, and temporary works personnel. It is intended to support technical design competence within the learner’s training and professional scope; it does not automatically authorise independent structural engineering practice.

Qualification Time 800

To enrol on the HiQual UK Level 4 Diploma in Scaffolding Design & Engineering, learners should normally meet the following entry requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or above and demonstrate an interest in scaffold design, construction engineering or temporary works.

  • Hold a relevant Level 3 qualification in scaffolding, construction, engineering or a related discipline. Equivalent international qualifications may also be accepted.

  • Have relevant industry experience or prior knowledge of scaffold components, construction drawings, work-at-height safety and basic technical calculations.

  • Possess sufficient English language proficiency and mathematical competence to interpret design information, complete calculations and prepare technical documentation.

Equivalent experience and prior learning may be considered through an appropriate admission process. Admission does not automatically establish competence to undertake every category of scaffold design independently.

1. Principles of Scaffold Design : Introduces scaffold design objectives, structural behaviour, system selection, design responsibilities, intended use, design limitations, and the relationship between scaffold configuration and site requirements.

2. Design Briefs, Standards and Compliance : Covers the preparation of design briefs, interpretation of applicable standards and guidance, manufacturer specifications, site information, dimensional requirements, design assumptions, and compliance documentation.

3. Structural Mechanics and Load Assessment : Develops understanding of forces, reactions, bending, shear, compression, tension, load combinations, imposed loads, wind effects, and load paths relevant to scaffold structures.

4. Stability, Ties and Foundations : Examines scaffold stability, bracing arrangements, tie patterns, anchorage, foundation conditions, base reactions, overturning risks, deflection, and the effects of scaffold geometry on structural performance.

5. Design Calculations and Component Selection : Introduces scaffold design calculations, component capacities, connection behaviour, material properties, load distribution, design checks, and the selection of components against applicable technical data and design criteria.

6. Special Scaffolds and Temporary Works : Covers design considerations for cantilever scaffolds, bridging structures, loading bays, temporary roofs, shoring, support scaffolds, and other arrangements requiring specific calculations or specialist design review.

7. Technical Drawings and Design Documentation : Develops skills in producing scaffold layouts, elevations, sections, connection details, tie schedules, design notes, calculation records, revision controls, and installation information.

8. Design Verification and Integrated Project : Applies design principles to a scaffold case study involving a design brief, load assessment, stability checks, drawings, risk controls, design verification, and a coordinated technical submission.

  • Develops a structured understanding of scaffold design and engineering principles.

  • Strengthens knowledge of structural behaviour, load paths and scaffold stability.

  • Builds understanding of loading, component capacity and design calculations.

  • Improves awareness of the design requirements for specialised scaffold configurations.

  • Develops technical drawing, design-note and calculation-record skills.

  • Reinforces design risk assessment, checking, revision control and technical communication.

  • Supports progression toward further study in scaffold design, temporary works and construction engineering.

  • Encourages designers to recognise the limits of their competence and refer specialist engineering issues appropriately.

This qualification is suitable for:

  • Experienced scaffolders and scaffold supervisors progressing into technical design responsibilities.

  • Scaffold inspectors seeking to broaden their understanding of scaffold design and structural behaviour.

  • Construction technicians involved in temporary works planning and design coordination.

  • Engineering and construction personnel working with scaffold contractors or temporary works teams.

  • Individuals preparing for further specialist training in scaffold design, structural calculations or temporary works engineering.

Learners should have sufficient prior construction, scaffolding or technical knowledge to engage with the qualification’s calculations and design-based assessment.

Assessment Format: Written knowledge examination, engineering calculation assignments, interpretation of technical drawings, design case studies and an integrated scaffold design portfolio.

Total Questions: 60 written questions across the knowledge assessment components, supplemented by calculation exercises and project-based assessment.

Passing Score: 70% in the written assessment, together with satisfactory completion of all mandatory calculations, drawings and project criteria.

Duration: 120 minutes for the written examination, with separately scheduled time for technical assignments and the design portfolio.

Certification: Successful learners may be awarded the HiQual UK Level 4 Diploma in Scaffolding Design & Engineering, subject to the qualification’s formal approval and assessment requirements.
